Wow, has my life changed in just two weeks!

I'm going to be totally honest, when I was first told by my digestive health doctor, that I was going to have to go on the FODMAP diet, I was partly curious and partly scared. This diet is no joke and a major life changer in many ways. FODMAP (which stands for Fermentable, Oligo-Di-Mono-saccharides And Polyols) was invented by Australian IBS Specialists, Peter Gibson and Susan Shepherd.  It means omitting glucose, fructose, and lactose from your diet.

Basically, FODMAPs are foods that are poorly absorbed by the small intestine and then passed on to the lower intestine. Here the foods are mixed with bacteria to help break the foods down. This is where much of the pain IBS sufferers encounter. It causes bloating, cramping, sharp to severe pain.  The effect very from person to person and this diet is more of a last resort situation. After suffering for over two years, I was more than willing to endure the “good bye” of some of my favorite foods (like my oh so yummy Greek yogurt!).

Is it worth it? Absolutely!!!!  I have been strictly following the diet for the last two and a half weeks and I have gained so much that the food sacrifices don’t even compare. I have been living in pain and fear since my son was born. I have since learned that IBS is usually brought on by a time of extreme stress and I guess having a very hard pregnancy falls under that category. Any hooo, in the last two weeks I have gained my body back. As I have said in previous I was on some major pain killers since having Jasper. Now I am pain free!! And to put icing on the cake, I have lost 15 lbs!! I wasn't expecting to lose anything. Also my mood swings (which I know anyone who has any kind of every pain can relate) have mellowed out to the point that I actually feel normal!! (If there is such a thing as normal! Ha!)

Yesterday, I was cleaning the house. I love to just sweep everything into one big pile so the mess is in one place. I use to sit and sort, then have to bend over to pick it all up to put things away. By the time I am done (even with the help of Quinton, my 6 year old) I am exhausted! So back to yesterday, I was cleaning and after about 30 minutes, I realized, I wasn't exhausted, a little tired maybe. However,  I felt like I could do so much more, instead of having to sit and take a break.

Quinton told me the other day, “Mommy, I’m so glad you are feeling better. You are so much more fun now.” I wanted to cry! I have seen such a change in both my boys; they are much more calm and content. I realize now how much I was affecting them and how much I am having a better influence on them. The saying, “If Momma isn't happy, than no one is happy,” unfortunately has been true in my house. But that was then and this is now. Really I can go on and on about how just changing my diet has helped my life, my family, my body. I don’t even crave Greek yogurt anymore or any of the other things I thought I would miss.

I would highly recommend to anyone who’s doctor recommends the FODMAP diet, as intimidating as it can seem, just try it for a couple of weeks and you will see how it will change your life for the better!!!
